“Where is Harry?”-an award winning short film- finally online!

3 Sep

Nearly two and a half years ago I took a risk and sent one of my treatments to the Allegro Short Lab competition organised by the Off-Plus Camera International Film Festival in Krakow (Poland). Two weeks later I received a message that I was shortlisted and together with 5 other hopefulls invited to a weekend long workshops, where we had an opportunity to discuss and develop our projects with the help of the industry-professionals. After that, we were given 5 weeks to complete the films. That meant 5 weeks to write a script, cast actors, find crew, find locations, shoot and edit the film. Not much considering I held a full time job at the same time. However, it wasn’t the first time that I proved to myself that the more things I had to do, the more efficient and organised I suddenly became. Plus, I had never been so determined and so hopeful to win a competition as I was while making “Where is Harry?”.

All that determination and hard work paid off. Despite some expected “unexpected difficulties” the film was completed on time. The edit was finished and uploaded 5 minutes before the deadline. And during the festival’s Opening Ceremony, I was announced as the winner. “Where is Harry?” won the first prize!

Since Krakow, the film was shown in Koszalin (Poland), London (United Kingdom) and Los Angeles (USA).Today it is being sent out there- to the wider public. Enjoy! And if you like it, share it with others, like it on Facebook or post a comment here.

Making-of “Where is Harry?”- part 1

26 Jan

Slowly but surely the website is being updated and now you can read about my award-winning short film “Where is Harry?” under the Projects page.

However, if you’d like to know about of the making of the film, read further. This is part 1 of the series of blogs about how the film was developed from the idea to its finish.

The Idea

“Where is Harry?” is a spin-off of another short film ‘I’m fine’ , a 1min film I made long time ago for the ‘One minute Orange film competition’. ‘I’m fine’ tells a story about a young woman who cannot accept that changes in her life. I was the writer (on the day(!); kids, please don’t do it at home), the camera person, the director and the editor. A real film school for me. Anyway, I revisited this idea few years later. I develop it by aging the main character and linking the story to dementia, the plague of the XXI century.

The competition

However, even though I had the story for quite some time, I didn’t feel confident enough to do it. So I decided to push myself by sending a treatment for the Allegro Short Lab competition, which I found out about on the website of the Off-Plus Camera Film Festival. It worked! The treatment got into the second stage of the competition and I was invited for a weekend of workshops aiming at developing all 6 shortlisted ideas.

After that- the real competition started; we were given 5 weeks to make the films… The prize was mind-blowing, a deal with a professional producer to make another short film with a budget of 50,000 Polish Zlotych (about £10,000). I was in it, to win it!

The link below allows you to watch a short video summary of the workshops published the Off Plus Camera TV. The video is in Polish but even if you don’t speak the language, I’m sure you’ll get the main idea.
